An Analysis of Research Trends in Art Therapy for PTSD in Korea
Kim Do-Hee

Abstract
This study was to examine research trends in art therapy for PTSD in Korea, and to present guidelines for future research and therapy. To this end, we conducted a literature review of 46 papers collected via academic research databases in terms of data trends, sample characteristics, research methods, art therapy techniques, and therapy format. The research results are as follows. First, although research on art therapy for PTSD has been steadily published in Korea since 2005, the research has mainly focused on a single subject. Second, in terms of sample characteristics, the proportion of children, adolescents and women was high. In terms of trauma type, many of the subjects suffered from sexual abuse and complex trauma, but only a few of them had been diagnosed with PTSD. Third, in terms of research methods, a single-subject design in which scores before and after the incident were compared, and that included session observations, was predominant. In terms of research tools, BDI, KFD, and KHTP were used most, in that order of frequency. Fourth, art therapy techniques based on various theoretical backgrounds were used, and art therapy produced clinically significant effects not only in stress responses, a characteristic symptom of PTSD, but also in various areas. Despite these differences in treatment goals, similar sub-goals and therapy activities were involved. Fifth, in terms of intervention settings, intervention was delivered mostly in therapy rooms upon request. Most sessions were conducted once a week for 60 min, with 12 sessions total. However, there was significant variation in the number of sessions.
